System Requirements

These are the minimum recommended system requirements for MDaemon email server for Windows to run. This does not take into account running multiple programs simultaneously. If you are running other programs on the computer at the same time, that computer should exceed these recommendations.

Like all mail servers MDaemon's performance is primarily limited by it's disk access speeds - performance will improve with faster disk throughput. Fast disks and regular disk defragmentation are recommended for optimal performance.

MDaemon Messaging Server

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP/2003/Vista/2008/7 operating system (including 64-bit versions)
CPU: 1GHz or higher (multi-core processor recommended)
RAM: 512 MB or more (1 GB and above recommended)
Disk space: 100 MB for the installation plus additional space for each user's mailbox (5GB per user recommended)
Networking: Network Card with a unique fixed MAC address, TCP/IP networking, Internet access
Other: Internet Explorer 6 or higher

For the BlackBerry® Edition of MDaemon Messaging Server, the following points differ from above:-

CPU: 2.4 GHz processor or higher (multi-core processor recommended)
RAM: 1 GB of memory or higher (2 GB and above recommended)
Disk space: 1 GB for the installation plus additional space for each user's mailbox (5GB per user recommended)
Other: BES is not supported on a machine running the 'Terminal Server Role', please see this KB article for more information.

SecurityPlus plug-in for MDaemon

MDaemon version: version 9.5 or higher
Other notes: Your SecurityPlus licence must at least match your MDaemon licence size. Where MDaemon is acting as a gateway in front of other email servers, the SecurityPlus licence size must at least match the number of accounts that exist on the servers behind MDaemon that SecurityPlus is providing protection to

Outlook Connector plug-in for MDaemon (installed on the server)

MDaemon version: version 9.0 PRO or higher

Outlook Connector client (installed on the client)

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP/2000/Vista/7 operating system (Only 32-bit versions of listed OS).
Client: Outlook XP, 2003, 2007. Outlook 2010 is NOT currently fully supported
CPU: 2.4 GHz or higher recommended
RAM: 500MB or more (1GB and above recommended)
Disk space: 5MB for the installation of the Outlook Connector client. For performance and compatibility reasons Outlook Connector maintains a local cache - additional disk space will be required for these cache files which will grow with time. Our recommendation is to budget on 500MB per Outlook Connector enabled profile however this will vary depending on the size of the users MDaemon account
Networking: Network Card, TCP/IP networking
Other notes: The latest Service Pack needs to be installed for all versions of Microsoft Outlook for Outlook Connector to run. Outlook 2000 also requires "Post-Service Pack 3 Hotfix Package July 3, 2003." This hotfix is available for download from Microsoft Support

For optimal performance of Outlook Connector for MDaemon® with your email network, please review the general recommendations and deployment considerations listed below.

General Recommendations

  • Outlook 2000 is no longer supported.
  • Wherever possible, using Outlook 2003 and 2007® is recommended over using Outlook 2002® on client PCs.
  • We highly recommend using a single Outlook Connector account in a profile of its own.
  • Use Outlook Connector with MDaemon Pro 9 and above.
  • Excluded the local Outlook Connector cache file from realtime scanning by third party desktop anti-virus applications otherwise corruption of the cache may occur.
  • Outlook® should only be configured to use HTML or Plain Text format for sending emails. Outlook should not be configured to use Word as its email editor or to use Rich Text Format (RTF) - both of these methods result in emails which do not adhere to Internet standards.
  • Configure Outlook Connector's 'Send/Receive' tab to only download headers and to only check the Inbox folder for new items at each Outlook send/receive - these are the default settings.
  • Regular defragmentation of the MDaemon server's hard disk is recommended for maximum performance. Server performance can be further improved by reducing the amount of logging MDaemon is doing along with moving the logs folder and user/public/queues folders to a physically separate disk.
  • Configure the Outlook Connector client to automatically purge message bodies older than 90 days and compact its local database on shutdown every 7 days (the default settings). This helps keep the database size down and so helps performance.
  • Ensure that your Outlook client is fully service packed with the latest updates from Microsoft.
  • Remove all non-essential Outlook COM add-ins and Exchange Client Extensions.
  • Encourage users to only keep in their Inbox, emails that they are still working on and to file or archive older messages.
  • Encourage users to minimise the number of folders and volume of messages that they keep in their email account. Using an archiving solution will help here - our recommendtaion is MailStore.

Deployment Considerations

The list below represents issues which should be considered prior to deployment. It should not be taken as definitive or complete, and we always recommend testing the products in your own environment to ensure that compatibility and features are as required prior to purchase.

  • Outlook 2010 is not officially supported, it will work but only in a limited fashion, for more information please see this KB article.
  • The Outlook SMS add-in is not currently supported by Outlook Connector.
  • In Outlook 2007, custom category names/colors may not be retained after it is restarted.
  • S/MIME encoded (digitally signed) emails are not currently supported in Outlook Connector.
  • Outlook 2007 may use excessive amounts of memory if you have a large number of folders, each with thousands of messages in them where grouping is also being used. Note, this problem is also present in an Exchange 2003®/Outlook 2007 installation and is not specific to Outlook Connector.
  • Outlook's search folders will only reflect changes to items if Outlook has been re-started.
  • Users with large mailboxes may experience reduced performance using Outlook Connector in comparison to using an IMAP or POP3 account. This is most noticeable when opening Outlook, when large folders are accessed for the first time, when using Outlook 2003's 'Search Folders,' or when accessing the Journal folder.
  • Outlook custom forms and custom template files (.OFT) are not currently supported by Outlook Connector.
  • The 'Activities' tab for Contacts may not work or may cause Outlook to hang (on very large profiles).
  • For performance reasons, roaming users may need to relocate their Outlook Connector cache files on a network share so that the data does not roam with their profile.
  • Compatibility with third party Outlook plug-ins and PDA synchronization software cannot be guaranteed - the trial period should be used to ensure compatibility and functionality with any important plug-ins prior to purchase.
  • Outlook Connector does not make use of PST files and so compatibility with any software which requires PST files should be checked prior to purchase. In some cases, adding an empty PST file to the Outlook Connector profile may help.
  • BlackBerry's Desktop Manager synchronization tool is not compatible with the Outlook Connector client.
  • In Outlook 2003, when scheduling meetings, users need to select Tools -> Check Names for the free/busy information to update.
  • Journal folders are not supported inside MDaemon's WorldClient webmail interface.
MDaemon Messaging Server is available in three commercial editions Standard, PRO and BlackBerry® Edition. Certain features described may be specific to the version of MDaemon you are running and may also require the SecurityPlus or Outlook Connector plug-ins or an ActiveSync licence key which are available to purchase seperately. A feature comparison chart is available here. Certain management, security, or wireless synchronization features may not be available in all markets; please refer to product release notes.
